Let’s Talk Thyroid Symptoms:
Aches + Pains + Hashimoto’s
Aches, pains, stiffness, cramps, weakness. Given Hashimoto’s at core is an inflammatory problem, it’s no surprise that those with it have inflammatory issues throughout our bodies.
Muscle weakness was a key symptom that triggered me realising something was seriously wrong with my health, whilst this is related, I have dealt with it separately here.
It’s normal for everyone it seems to have body aches & pains from time to time, so how do we know to associate them with thyroid disorder? We need to look at our bodies as a whole, and if we are experiencing a collection of thyroid symptoms it’s worth investigating.
There are many reasons those with underactive thyroid issues experience aches and pains. Here are some I’ve found:
→ Our bodies either aren’t producing enough thyroid hormone
→ The body is not properly converting the inactive T4 into the active T3.
→ Our thyroid receptor cells aren’t working properly and cells aren’t ‘receiving’ the thyroid hormones.
→ Inability for the muscles to relax because they don’t have enough energy in the form of ATP (cellular energy). I found this article by Dr Westin Childs very helpful:
Let’s Get Practical:
🩸Get your thyroid levels tested – it’s so important to know if this is an underlying cause. Linked to this is getting our medication levels right too.
⬇️ Take an overall approach of reducing inflammation – diet, lifestyle… make it all about this at core.
🦠 Improve your gut health & remove gluten. Investigate removing nightshades as a way to reduce pain. Many find an AIP (auto immune protocol) diet can help.
💊 Consider a good quality nutritional supplement. I like doTERRA’s Lifelong Vitality. You can get a blood test to see if you need additional supplementation to deal with any deficiencies – a naturopath or holistic doctor would be able to help here.
💦 Essential oils such as copaiba, frankincense & turmeric are great for promoting healthy inflammatory response. Other oils such as wintergreen, marjoram, basil, & blends such as Ice Blue & Aromatouch from doTERRA are some of my favourites for topical application over aching & paining body parts!
🗣 Affirmations are a great way to change your mindset. “My body is strong and pain free” is one I found helpful a few years ago when everything ached and to be honest I was sick of feeling sore.
🚶♀️ Gentle movement – a quiet walk (not run), pilates, yoga, stretching. Low impact exercise that won’t stress the body.
🧘♀️ Meditate, reduce stress, sleep, eat well – all things we’ve been talking about – they all help to reduce stress and inflammation and therefore muscle & joint aches & pains.
🏥 Consider investigating other causes such as arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
