heavy bleeding + hashimotos

Having a malfunctioning thyroid impacts our reproductive systems. We will cover low libido tomorrow and infertility later in the month. For now, let’s talk about the impact on our menstrual cycle.

Like with many of the symptoms we are covering, heavy bleeding and other menstrual irregularities may be signs of other non-thyroid issues and should always be investigated with your health professionals.

Heavy bleeding can be a sign of an underactive thyroid as can long periods, painful periods, infrequent periods.

Whilst I haven’t had heavy bleeding, when my thyroid function is low I have a longer cycle and some blood clots than when it’s functioning optimally.

Our hormones are complicated, I don’t profess to have a full understanding of this aspect of thyroid disease. I just know when things aren’t right, something deeper isn’t right and needs to be investigated. We need to remember that we are responsible for digging deeper into our health.

Tips:

🩸Get your thyroid levels tested – it’s so important to know if this is an underlying cause. Linked to this is getting our medication levels right too.

💦 Essential oils such as the women’s monthly blend (Clary Calm) rubbed over the abdomen can help support our hormones. You could also try this recipe from The Essential Life book: For heavy flow – 6 drops Roman Chamomile, 4 drops geranium, 3 drops lemon, 2 drops cypress in a 15ml bottle topped with carrier oil and massaged into the abdomen several times a day starting the week leading up to menstruation.
