Let’s Talk Thyroid Symptoms:
Low Vitamin D + Hashimoto’s
Have you noticed everyone seems to be talking about Vitamin D these days? It seems that Vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for many auto-immune diseases, viral infections, inflammation and immune issues.
Low levels of Vitamin D & Hashimoto’s are part of this picture. If you have Hashimoto’s it is expected you will have some kind of issue with Vitamin D. In light of this if you know you have low Vitamin D and a host of other thyroid symptoms that we have been talking about, it would definitely be worth getting your thyroid levels and antibodies tested.
Vitamin D reduces oxidative stress and tissue inflammation so critical for those with autoimmune issues.
People with Hashimoto’s have a genetic predisposition to Vitamin D metabolism dysfunctions.
Here is a chart created by Dr Datis Kharrazian that highlights some of the impacts on Vitamin D Metabolism for Hashimoto’s patients.
Given Vitamin D is so important, everyone could do with knowing their Vitamin D levels are adequate. Next time you go to the doctor why not discuss getting your Vit D tested. I’m a big fan for proactive health management.
Let’s get practical
💉 Make sure your Vitamin D levels are tested regularly if you have Hashimoto’s or suspect you might. Our levels want to optimally be 50-100ng/mL.
💊 Take a Vitamin D supplement – the dosage will need to be determined with your health practitioner but studies suggest that Hashimoto’s patients require high doses.
☀️ Get time in the sun with skin exposed – you only need a few minutes.
🦠 Watch your gut health – gut inflammation can create Vit D absorption issues. To reduce gut inflammation, remove typically inflammatory foods – gluten, grains, dairy, sugars, lectins (follow a paleo or AIP diet)
